Sharpsburg is small town located in the south eastern corner of Washington County, MD. Thirteen miles south of Hagerstown, MD and 26 miles west of Frederick, MD, this small hamlet found itself in the center of a major battle during the Civil War in September 1862. Located a few miles east of the Potomac River, many of her residents worked on the Chesapeake and Ohio canal running barges of goods up the river from Washington, D.C. during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Today, Sharpsburg is a bedroom community with her residents traveling as close as Hagerstown, MD and as far as Washington, DC to work.
Sharpsburg is a great destination for tourist being located near three national parks. Antietam National Battlefield wraps around the eastern border of town. The C&O Canal National Park runs along the Potomac River, from Cumberland, MD to Washington, D.C. The canal can be accessed in two locations within five miles of the town. Finally, within a sixteen mile drive is Harpers Ferry National Park. If you are feeling adventurous, you can park at one of the C&O Canal access points and bike to Harpers Ferry, which by canal, is a mere fifteen miles away.
Sharpsburg boasts a few eating establishments serving everything from subs and pizza to dinner fare. There are also bed and breakfast establishments both within the town limits and just outside of its borders. If shopping is on your itinerary, you need only to travel approximately 13 miles north to the Prime Outlets in Hagerstown, MD or browse the eclectic shops in nearby Shepherdstown, WV.
